PLENARY III: CASE STUDY: PORTLAND, OREGON ![]()
Dan Saltzman is currently serving the third year of his first term in office as Portland City Commissioner. His responsibilities include management of Bureau of Environmental Services (the City’s Sewer and Stormwater Utility), Office of Sustainable Development, Bureau of Emergency Communications (911 Center), and the Office of Neighborhood Involvement. As City Commissioner he has been successful in advancing integrated environmental and economic stewardship by leading the effort to establish the City’s Green Building program and the creation of the Office of Sustainable Development. He is also responsible for the City's oversight of the Sustainable Development Commission, Metropolitan Exposition Recreation Commission and the Metropolitan Human Rights Center. Dan was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, graduated from Beaverton High School, received a B.S. from Cornell University's School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and an M.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He spent many years in the private sector as the principal in an environmental engineering firm. He has served on the Board of Directors for Host Development, Portland Community College and currently sits on the Policy Advisory Committee for Metro, the Portland area regional urban planning agency. Long associated with championing services for children and families, he has created an early childhood services fund at the City and ensured the completion of a Children’s Receiving Center for abused children. He has also been a long time volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Prior to being elected to the Portland City Council, Dan served as Multnomah County Commissioner and Portland Community College Board Member.
