Dr. Howard Frumkin gave the Opening Keynote Lecture of the
7th
National Conference on Science, Policy, and the
Environment: Integrating Environment and Human Health
on February 1, 2007.

 
Over 850 conference participants, including leaders at all levels of government,
academia,
and the private sector, attended the event.

 

 
In the plenary roundtable Strong Connections, Dr. Jonathan Patz discussed the
interconnections between climate change and public health, stressing that global
environmental change creates the urgent need for bringing together environmental and
health science.

 
The conference featured eighteen exhibits, representing the wide array of stakeholders involved
in environment-health issues.  Federal agencies, academic institutions, non-profit organizations,
 and businesses were among the exhibitors.

 

 
Dr. Victoria Lee chaired the breakout session Integrating Environment, Culture, and Human Well-being.  The first afternoon of the conference featured 23 concurrent breakout sessions, each addressing a specific topic related to environment and health. 

 

 
Dr. Robert Engelman asks participants of his session, Population, Gender, Justice and Health for their input.  A set of targeted recommendations for each session was developed and incorporated into the conference and conference follow up. The conference provided opportunities for networking and building new collaborations
between those working in the fields of environment and human health. 

 

 
NCSE Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Dr. Herbert Needleman, whose groundbreaking studies on the health effects of lead at “silent” doses has influenced government regulation and lead poisoning programs  and Dr. Theo Colborn, for her pioneering work on the effects of synthetic chemicals on the endocrine system.

 


 NCSE Executive Director, Dr. Peter Saundry, introduced Google.org Executive
Director, 
Dr. Larry Brilliant, as the 7th John H. Chafee Memorial Lecturer.

 

 
Dr. Brilliant's lecture, Climate, Poverty, Health: Time for Preventative Medicine, stressed
the serious threats climate change posed to global health, particularly in the developing
world,and identified opportunities to face these threats.

 

 
Dr. Brilliant greets Georgia Chafee Nassikas, daughter of Senator John H. Chafee, Dr. Timothy Wirth, President of the UN Foundation and former US Senator, and Ambassador Richard Benedick, President of the National Council for Science and the Environment.

 

 
Following the Chafee Memorial lecture, conference participants had the opportunity to relax and mingle at the evening reception.

Dr. Karim Ahmed, Secretary/Treasurer of NCSE introduced Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, who delivered the Keynote Address. 


 
Dr. Roses, who is also Regional Director for the Regional Offices for the Americas of the World Health Organization discussed the intimate connection between human health and the environment internationally.


 

 
The second morning of the conference featured 5 concurrent symposia.  Here, Dr. Townsend Peterson discusses the factors impacting the spread of avian influenza in "The Cultural, Socio-Economic and Ecological Determinants of Avian Influenza and its Spread."

Lunch on the second day featured an opportunity for young professionals and students to network with established experts in the environment and health fields at several Mentoring tables.

New Mexico State University student Ana Cordova displays her research on the impacts of localized food systems on health and the environment.  Ms. Cordova also assisted in photography and video coverage of the conference.

The conference concluded with the plenary roundtable discussion "Healthy People, Healthy Planet: From Evidence to Action."  Terry Tamminen, who earlier in the day signed copies of his book Lives Per Gallon: The True Costs of Our Oil Addiction, provided insight into moving towards an integrated approach to the environment and human health.
